Total Solar Eclipse 2026 and the Perseid afterparty

On August 12, the Moon will switch off the Sun across a narrow path from the Arctic to Spain. Hours later, comet dust will begin writing bright lines across a moonless sky. Here is where the double feature actually works.

If we had one trip to choose for both events, we would go to inland northern Spain. Castilla y León and the Ebro Valley offer totality, relatively encouraging August weather records and a properly dark night for watching the Perseids. Iceland is the more dramatic setting for the eclipse itself, with a higher Sun and longer totality in places, but cloud and lingering summer twilight make the meteor shower a less certain pleasure.

Why this night is unusual

Why does one New Moon create both spectacles?

A solar eclipse can happen only at New Moon, when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the alignment will be exact enough for the Moon’s dark central shadow — the umbra — to touch Earth. Anyone inside that moving ribbon will see the Sun’s brilliant surface disappear and its ghostly corona emerge.

This is not an especially long eclipse. The maximum total phase lasts 2 minutes 18.2 seconds, at 17:45:53.8 UTC over the North Atlantic just west of Iceland. Yet its geography makes it exceptional: western Iceland receives totality with the Sun about 25 degrees high, while Spain receives a low, cinematic eclipse close to sunset. Much of Europe, western Africa and northern North America gets a partial eclipse.

Then the same New Moon that produced the eclipse leaves the night sky free of lunar glare. Earth is simultaneously moving through dust released by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Those grains enter the atmosphere at roughly 59 kilometres per second, creating the bright, fast meteors known as the Perseids.

The two spectacles will not happen at the same moment. Totality lasts barely a minute or two, and although a stray bright meteor could appear during those brief dark moments, the chances are small. Think of it as an eclipse at sunset followed by the Perseids later that night, once the sky has become properly dark.

Where will the total solar eclipse be visible?

The path of totality begins in remote northern Russia, passes across the Arctic and Greenland, reaches western Iceland, crosses the North Atlantic, then cuts through the northern half of Spain before ending near the Balearic Islands. A very small area of northeastern Portugal also enters the path.

Being close is not enough. Totality exists only inside the umbral path. A 99.9% partial eclipse still leaves a fierce sliver of the Sun visible; it does not reveal the corona and eclipse glasses must stay on throughout. Before travelling, check the exact pin for your observing site on the NASA eclipse map, the official Spanish IGN viewer or Iceland’s official eclipse portal.

For the complete night: Spain

The Sun will be low, so the western horizon matters. In return, inland Spain offers promising weather records and real darkness for the Perseids.

For the eclipse itself: Iceland

The Sun will be higher, the landscape is extraordinary and totality reaches 2m 13s on land. Cloud is the gamble, and twilight hides fainter meteors.

For an Arctic expedition: Greenland

This is the remote option. It makes sense with a specialist land or ship expedition that can adjust its position for weather.

For everyone else: stay local

The UK, Ireland, much of Europe and parts of North America can watch a partial eclipse, then step outside again for the Perseids after dark.

Spain, Iceland or Greenland?

Where should you actually go to watch it?

For both events, start with inland northern Spain

Best zones: Castilla y León around León, Palencia, Valladolid and Burgos; and lower, open parts of the Ebro Valley around Zaragoza. These areas sit comfortably inside totality while offering better historical prospects for a clear August evening than the Cantabrian coast.

Spain’s National Geographic Institute, using 16 years of AEMET data, places the chance of clear or mostly clear skies on the Cantabrian coast at roughly 30–50%. Inland Castilla y León and the Ebro Valley generally show moderate-to-high frequencies of favorable sky conditions. That is climatology, not a forecast, but it is the strongest reason to keep a car and a flexible plan.

The trade-off is geometry. Totality occurs between roughly 8:27 and 8:33 p.m. CEST, with the Sun sinking toward the west. In A Coruña it is about 12 degrees high; in Burgos, about 8 degrees; in Palma, only about 2 degrees. An otherwise perfect field is useless if a ridge, tree line, apartment block or haze bank covers the western horizon.

For the eclipse itself, western Iceland is hard to beat

The shadow reaches the Westfjords first and then crosses Snæfellsnes, the Reykjavík region and Reykjanes. At Látrabjarg, the longest totality on mainland Iceland reaches approximately 2 minutes 13 seconds. The Sun is much higher than it is in Spain, reducing the danger that distant terrain or horizon haze will erase the view.

For most visitors, Reykjavík or Reykjanes is logistically safer than chasing the final seconds at a remote cliff. Official Icelandic planning includes road closures and one-way traffic systems, especially around Látrabjarg and the southern Westfjords. Arrive early, obey closures and do not improvise a roadside stop.

Iceland’s weakness is the second act. Reykjavík’s Sun sets close to 10 p.m. in mid-August, and the city does not reach full astronomical darkness that night. Bright Perseid fireballs remain possible, but many faint meteors will be lost to twilight. Choose Iceland for the corona, landscape and higher Sun — not for the maximum meteor count.

Spain’s Atlantic coast offers a higher Sun — and more cloud

A Coruña, Gijón and Oviedo get the eclipse earlier and with the Sun higher than eastern Spain. A sea horizon can be magnificent, and Oviedo/Gijón receive relatively long totality. The cost is Atlantic weather. If forecasts favor the coast, it may beat inland Spain; if low cloud or marine haze appears, keep an inland escape route.

Valencia and the Balearics offer a beautiful sunset gamble

Valencia, Castellón, Mallorca and Ibiza promise a striking eclipsed sunset. They also place the Sun almost on the horizon. A thin cloud bank, hill, hotel or palm tree can end the experience. Scout the exact azimuth in advance and choose a legal, open site with an unobstructed west-northwestern view. Do not assume a beach automatically faces the right direction.

Greenland is an expedition, not a casual eclipse trip

Greenland offers extraordinary Arctic scenery and portions of the path near the centerline, but totality crosses remote territory. Ittoqqortoormiit itself is extremely close to the path yet remains on the partial side, which shows why exact coordinates matter. Unless you are joining a specialist expedition with a weather-diversion plan, Greenland is not the place for an improvised eclipse trip.

What will the rest of the world see?

United Kingdom and Ireland

A deep partial eclipse is visible in the early evening. London reaches roughly 90% coverage around 7:12 p.m. BST; Dublin reaches about 94% around 7:10 p.m. local time. There is no safe naked-eye phase.

Continental Europe

France, Portugal, Scandinavia and much of mainland Europe receive a substantial partial eclipse, often low in the evening sky. Check local sunset because the Sun may set before the partial phase ends.

United States and Canada

Parts of northern North America see a partial eclipse. Coverage is modest in much of the contiguous US and stronger toward eastern Canada and the Arctic. Halifax reaches about 31%; use eye protection throughout.

India

The solar eclipse is not visible because it occurs after sunset in India. The Perseids are visible, weather permitting, but August monsoon cloud is the main obstacle. NASA’s eclipse stream begins at 10:45 p.m. IST.

After the Sun goes down

When and how should you watch the Perseids?

The Perseids are active from roughly July 17 to August 24, but 2026 offers unusually clean peak conditions because the Moon is new on August 12. The International Meteor Organization places the maximum on August 13. Spain’s IGN expects the strongest interval between 4 and 6 a.m. CEST, with intense activity possible from about 11 p.m. on August 12 until late morning on August 13.

The American Meteor Society lists a zenithal hourly rate of 100. That is an idealized number: a perfectly dark sky, an unobstructed view and the radiant directly overhead. A more honest expectation at a rural site is often 30–50 Perseids per hour, with fewer under suburban light pollution, haze or cloud. Meteors arrive irregularly; several can appear within minutes, followed by silence.

Where should you look?

The meteors appear to radiate from Perseus in the northeastern sky, but they can flash anywhere. Do not stare only at the radiant. Lie back, take in as much sky as possible and look toward the darkest broad area away from lamps. After midnight, the radiant climbs higher and the rate generally improves. No telescope or binoculars are needed; both reduce your field of view.

What makes the wait more comfortable

  • Move away from city light and direct glare; use a recognized dark-sky location where access is legal.
  • Give your eyes at least 20–30 minutes to adapt. Keep phones dim and use a red-light mode.
  • Bring a reclining chair, warm layer, water and insect protection. Even hot days can become cool before dawn.
  • Watch for at least one hour. Short sessions can land in a natural lull.
  • Skip optics. For photography, use a tripod, wide lens, manual focus near infinity and repeated long exposures.

This is why our choice for the full night is Spain. Once evening twilight ends, inland observers get a properly dark sky. Iceland remains in lingering twilight, while high-Arctic Greenland is even less suitable for faint meteors. Iceland may give you the more memorable eclipse setting; Spain gives you the better chance of enjoying what comes afterwards too.

A serious word about safety

When must your eclipse glasses stay on?

The rule that prevents injury

If any part of the Sun’s bright surface is visible, approved solar protection must be in front of your eyes. Only observers inside the path of totality may remove eclipse glasses, and only after the Sun is completely covered. The instant a bright bead of sunlight returns, put them back on.

  • Use eclipse glasses or handheld viewers that comply with ISO 12312-2 and come from a trusted supplier.
  • Regular sunglasses, smoked glass, CDs, X-rays and homemade filters are not safe.
  • Inspect viewers for tears, scratches or loose filters. Supervise children.
  • Never look through binoculars, a telescope or a camera while wearing ordinary eclipse glasses. Concentrated sunlight can burn through them.
  • Optical devices need a purpose-built solar filter secured over the front of the lens or aperture. Ask an experienced solar observer if uncertain.
  • Outside the path of totality — including the UK, France, most of Portugal, the US and Canada — glasses stay on for the entire eclipse.

Planning the long night

How should you plan the night in Spain?

  1. Choose two or three sites, not one. Every option should sit well inside totality, allow legal parking and have a clear west-northwestern horizon. Download maps for offline use.
  2. Compare the short-range forecast. Use AEMET, not a single generic weather icon. Look at low cloud, high cloud, haze, wind and convective storms along possible driving routes.
  3. Be parked and settled. Roads and viewpoints may fill. Do not plan to arrive minutes before the partial eclipse.
  4. The partial eclipse begins. Exact time varies from west to east. Keep certified viewers on.
  5. Totality. Remove eye protection only when the bright solar surface is fully gone. Look at the corona with your eyes, notice the horizon and do not spend every second on a screen.
  6. Wait out the traffic and twilight. Eat, rest and relocate only if it is safe. Spain’s IGN specifically notes that the Perseids offer a reason not to join the immediate traffic surge.
  7. Begin meteor watching. Perseid activity should be strong and the radiant will keep climbing.
  8. Best Spanish peak window. This is the period to protect if you want the fullest second act.

One practical rule matters more than all the maps

Weather matters more than ten extra seconds of totality. A shorter eclipse in a clear sky is infinitely better than a centerline under cloud. Stay mobile, stay inside the path, and decide late.
