A young woman who hailed from Saqqez in Kurdistan province of Iran, Mahsa Amini, was picked up forcefully by the Hijab Police of Tehran and ruthlessly beaten up in the detention centre which is called “re-education class”. These detention centres are used to “teach” women to dress as per the Islamic code.
She was kidnapped by the Iranian authorities for showing her hair when she was visiting her relatives in Tehran. Her accompanying brother also suffered injuries while trying to prevent her from being kidnapped. Her brother rushed to the detention centre to find out about the murder of his sister in custody due to excessive beating. He could hear the screams of women held up at the detention centre. Unfortunately, one of the screams was the last scream of his sister. By the time she was brought to the hospital, doctors declared her dead due to a heart attack and stroke.

This is neither the first nor is it going to be the last incident of murder of women by Iranian authorities who try to enforce strict Islamic dress code. Almost every day deaths of women are reported from these detention centers where women are tortured for the slightest deviance from the dress code imposed by the state.
The recent killing has created a mass furor and the Iranian population is showing its anger openly against this injustice.

Iran was a liberal modern society till 1979 when the Islamic revolution under Ayatollah Khomeini swept across the nation and imposed strict control on women, their socio-cultural activities, and their public appearance.
Regressive medieval era practices were re-introduced into Iranian society which curbed the rights and freedom of women. With the increasing resentment among Irani citizens against such curbs and a faltering economy, the day is not far when the Iranian women in particular and the public, in general, will rise against the oppressive regime and overthrow it.
The video in the tweet below shows how the angry women of Iran are protesting against the imposing Hijab culture.

Hijab is defintely not a choice for women in Iran and other Islamic countries like Aghanistan. Its a tool to control the freedom, body and soul of women, relegating them to second class citizenry.
